The Bainbridge Island Police Department is currently accepting applications for its Citizen’s Academy.
The popular program covers 10 weeks with the island’s own police officers and gives residents hands-on experience with various aspects of law enforcement.
“This is a great opportunity for people to get to know the Bainbridge Island Police Department’s officers and staff on a more personal level and for the department to create connections within the community they serve,” said Officer Carla Sias, the program’s coordinator.
Topics include narcotics, criminal law, traffic enforcement, investigations and even defensive tactics. There will also be a chance to tour the 911 dispatch center, the county coroner’s office and ride alongs with on-duty island police officers.
Classes are from 7 to
9 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Sept. 11 and continuing through Nov. 13. Two optional Saturday sessions are also included.
Applicants who want to sign up must be 18 years old and be able to commit to the 10-week course. Class sizes are restricted to 20 participants. Applications are available on the city’s website, or from the front desk of the police department, and must be turned in by Aug. 31.
