Margo Wheelis
Published April 17, 2009
Margo (Jackson) Wheelis, off Bainbridge Island, died on April 17 of pancreatic cancer. She was 71.
Born in Syracuse, NY, Margo grew up in San Marino, Calif., and graduated from the University of Southern California, where she met the love of her life, Roger Wheelis.
Married for nearly 50 years, Margo and Roger were life-long sailors, cruising the coastal waters of California, Washington, and British Columbia. They made two long-distance voyages, sailing through the islands of the South Pacific all the way to New Zealand.
Margo taught school for more than 20 years, most recently at Ordway Elementary School on Bainbridge. She loved her students and treasured her time in the classroom.
In 2006, Margo and Roger returned to Bainbridge Island to be close to their daughter Pam, son-in-law Marc, and grandchildren Ryann and Miller. The move was a blessing because in the end Margo was surrounded by the people who meant so much to her.
Known for her kindness, humor, and warm spirit, Margo was a life-long adventurer. She embraced every challenge with grace and joy. At her request, no Kleenex, flowers, or casseroles; but contributions to Hospice of Kitsap County would be greatly appreciated.
