Laurel Caplan

Former Bainbridge Island resident Laurel Caplan, 73, died July 12 in Oceanside, Calif., after a long battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles. She attended UC Berkeley, UCLA and CSU Dominguez Hills, where she earned a master’s degree in gerontology.

She moved to Bainbridge in 1989, becoming the executive director of the Madison Avenue Retirement Center. She was president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Bainbridge Economic Council.

She is survived by Milton Caplan, her husband of 49 years; sons Brian and Ken; and four grandchildren.
