Alice Josephine McGaughy

Former Bainbridge Island resident Alice Josephine (Vildmo) McGaughy, 86, died Dec. 5.

She was born July 8, 1919, in Wafted City, N.D., to Norwegian immigrants Peter and Matte Vildmo. She was the youngest of four daughters. She sang in the church and school choirs, including a school trio group. She was a cheerleader and participated in gymnastics.

In 1939 she moved to Tacoma and attended Pacific Lutheran College. She later transferred to Washington State University, where she met Jack McGaughy. They were married in 1941.

They lived in various parts of the country, including Seattle, Mercer Island and Tacoma, and on three separate occasions, Schenectady, N.Y. In 1962 they moved to Bainbridge Island, where they lived for 37 years, before moving to Spokane in 1999.

She was preceded in death by her husband in June of this year. She is survived by sister Margaret of Bellingham; sons Michael (Connie) and Dennis (Liz), both of Spokane, and Scott (Vicki) of Graham, Wash.; grandchildren Sasha (Bill), Casey, Mitzie, Joshua (Amber), Josie-Lynne, Bryan (Charlotte), Brad, Brett and Brooke; and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Sydney.
