Velma Babnis Balut

Velma Babnis Balut, age 85, of Bainbridge Island, died Dec. 26 of advanced Parkinson’s disease at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Farrell, Pa., to Joseph and Anna Babnis. She graduated from Farrell High School and continued her education at a local business school in Pennsylvania.

Her husband, Emil E. Balut, was retired from the U.S. Navy. As a member of the Seattle branch and Unit 18 of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association, she enjoyed participating in the annual Memorial Day ceremonies at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery.

As a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Edwards Catholic Church, she spent many hours visiting residents of local nursing homes and continued her ministry when she became a resident at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was employed as a legal secretary for the Washington State Insurance Commissioners Office and Washington State Department of Health and Social Services. Following her retirement in 1980, she volunteered many hours with the Legal Aid Clinic in South Seattle. Her other interests included reading and gardening at her home.

She is survived by her daughter, Emily Braun Stipek; and brothers Stanley Babnis, of Farrell, Pa., Daniel Babnis of Mercer, Pa., and Peter Babnis of Hermitage, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil E. Balut, in 1967 and daughter Marguerite A. Balut in 1946.

Private burial services were held Dec. 31 at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Jan. 3 at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 4250 S. Mead, Seattle. Arrangements were by Kass Funeral Home.
