Alice Braunstein

Bainbridge Island resident Alice Braunstein, age 92, died Dec. 8 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Feb. 24, 1911 in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of Jacob and Miriam (Shapiro) Rosofsky.

She became an RN in New York City in 1932. Her nursing career took her from Massachusetts to California, Florida and Seattle.

She was always an active member of the local Jewish community, and prided herself on being its eldest member.

She was an avid reader and crotchetier, and her afghans are “everywhere.”

She volunteered at the Kline Galland Nursing Home in Seattle.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol Shakow, Indianola; one son, William Strauss, Anchorage, Alaska; and four grandchildren, David Strauss, Anchorage, Alaska; Justin Strauss, Victoria, B.C.; Aaron Shakow, and Miriam Shakow, both of Boston.

Graveside services were Dec. 10 at Port Blakely Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
