Gridders blank Prep
The Bainbridge football team did everything right on Friday night, defeating Seattle Prep 34-0 at West Seattle Stadium to open Metro League play on a good note.
Ross Cobb turned in another standout performance, rushing for 159 yards and two scores – one of which was an 86-yard score – and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jason Haley.
“It was a pretty intense game,” head coach Andy Grimm said. “We knew we had to come in and set the tone in Metro.
“Prep was kind of hard to scout,” he continued. “They’re 1-2 but they were in every game. They’re running a spread offense, but it’s like a (University of) Florida ‘spin’ offense.
“We spent a lot of time during the week looking at their option game and putting our defensive end on their quarterback and our outside linebacker on their pitchman.”
The gameplan worked out well for Bainbridge, as they held Seattle Prep to just 139 yards of total offense.
Along with Cobb’s three scores, Kyle Szarzynski ran for 31 yards and a score while Colin Feldtman added two field goals from 35 and 37 yards.
Szarzynski also had eight tackles and one sack while Anthony Carter added 11 tackles.
“I thought Prep’s offense could have been explosive, but credit our defense,” Grimm said. “They didn’t let them get on track.”
Grimm said that senior co-captain James Herman will be week-to-week with his knee injury.
He played the first quarter of the Prep game, but sat out the rest of the game.
Now comes the big test for the Spartans, as they travel to Eastside Catholic for its Homecoming and to test out their new field, then return for Bainbridge’s own Homecoming against nemesis O’Dea.
Bainbridge then heads to Lakeside before hosting Bishop Blanchet at home for the last game of the season.
Grimm knows the team’s performance in the next two games will go a long way toward getting them in the playoffs.
“We have to control the ball and get a couple of turnovers,” he said. “You can’t give these teams (a) short field, because they’re explosive teams like we can be, where (all of a sudden) it’s 28-0.”
He also said they’ll have to focus on keeping the Crusaders’ top running backs, Mike Bush and Mariol Bactol, from running all over them.
“They can hurt you with their feet,” he said. “Bush runs you over. He’s not a big guy and he has pretty good speed, but he’ll truck you with his thigh pads.
“We definitely need to keep their momentum down.”

Girl golfers beat ‘Cats
Anna Bourland earned medalist honors as the Bainbridge girls’ golf team defeated West Seattle 115-41 Monday.
Bourland shot an even-par 37 with seven pars and one birdie to score 36 Stableford points.
Senior captain Ryan Nottingham shot a four-over 41 with four pars and a birdie for 32 points.
Peyton Lunzer shot a 47 for 26 points while Jasmine Shattuck and Julia Gross shot 21 and 20 points respectively.
Maddy Devlin added six points.
Bainbridge played Holy Names yesterday for first place in Metro at Wing Point.

RENTON 34 BAINBRIDGE VARSITY BLUE 24
The Varsity Blue squad took on Renton Saturday on a beautiful fall afternoon. After a scoreless first 17 minutes, a decided rarity for the Blue team, Renton took an eight point lead on a safety and an interception return.
Bainbridge struck back with a 35 yard completion from quarterback Sam Kallas to running back Matt Stone, followed by a 45 yard touchdown strike to Stone. What had been a defensive battle turned into a shootout in the second half, with both teams trading touchdowns in rapid succession. Kallas scored three times on runs of 60 yards, 54 yards and five yards. Several nice runs were added by fullback Tino Peleti and Stone, and defensively, several crunching tackles were turned in by linebacker Jackson Larkin.
The Blue team next travels to Eastlake to take on the league champions this Saturday.
BAINBRIDGE ROOKIES 40 REDMOND GREEN 19
The Rookies spotted Redmond Green 13 points in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Then the Bainbridge rushing game exploded for three unanswered touchdowns in the first half.
Bainbridge continued to rack up rushing yards in second half averaging over 19 yard a carry on the day with five different players scoring touchdowns. The team gained 368 yards on just 19 carries for the whole game. The Rookies travel to Snoqualmie next Saturday to face Mt. Si White.
