Spartans up and down in third wrestling outing

SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High School varsity wrestling team again went 1-for-1 in their dual road match at Rainier Beach High Thursday, Dec. 14, emerging first victorious in a 42-36 smackdown against Cleveland, and then less triumphant from a 63-18 contest against their host.

Claiming victories by forfeit in the 106-, 152-, 160-, 170- and 195-pound brackets, Bainbridge earned wins several more: 113-pound Hiram Topham pinned Cleveland’s Moraco Fernandez in three minutes, and Cameron Williams (120 pounds) pinned Rio Sandoval in 1:27.

CHS won by forfiet in the 132- and 220-pound brackets, but wrestled their way to victory in several others: 126-pound Jeremy Truong pinned Rachel Longridge in 1:06; 138-pound Kevin Nguyen pinned Ben Dunscombe in 1:18; Thaddeus Driscoll (145 pounds) pinned Doug Takada in 5:39; and 285-pound Aram Gould pinned Sean Hooyer in 3 minutes.

The Spartans fared less well against Rainier Beach.

The 106-pound Spartan Hiram Topham pinned Ben Nguyen in 34 seconds; 113-pound Garrett Swanson pinned Rainier’s Timothy London in 1:19; 120-pound Antonio Orso pinned BHS’ Rachel Longridge in 3:07; and 126-pound Moses Howard pinned Rainier’s Cameron Williams in 3:31.

Ray Johnson (138 pounds) pinned BHS’ Ben Dunscombe in 1:52. Broy Myka (145) pinned Bainbridge’s Doug Takada (time not recorded), and 152-pound Mike Bethea pinned BHS’ Clayton Marsh in 3:57. Rainier Beach’s 160-pound Sam Scott pinned Pedro Delfino in 18 seconds.

The 170-pound senior Spartan Nate Michaels pinned Oscar Rosas in 4:44.

Rainier Beach’s 195-pound Zach Jones claimed an 11-5 decision win against Mac Schelbert. And, finally, 285-pound DJ Finley pinned heavyweight Spartan Sean Hooyer in 3:14. The host school claimed forfeit wins in the 132-, 182- and 220-pound brackets.
