Spartans split against Roosevelt

The Bainbridge girls tennis team corralled the Rough Riders as the Spartans topped Roosevelt 4-1 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle Tuesday.

Head Varsity Tennis Coach Jennifer Anne Shorr said 3-2 wins in the singles competition “were solid close matches with senior Sofia Scott (season debut) and captain Catherine Rolfes coming close.”

“Our doubles teams rocked the courts, sweeping all three matches in straight sets,” Shorr added, and gave great praise to Marianne Milander and Madison Culp; Jessica Pecunies and captain Jillian Abullarade and captain Lindsay Payne and Matty Dunham.

Shorr said the Spartan boys team played Roosevelt close, but added that “both singles matches went to Roosevelt with Eric Perkins and Oscar Bray doing their best against two seemingly human backboards.”

Doubles action also was tight and all matches went to three sets.

In Boys No. 3 doubles, Sean Westerhout and Elliot Weyland pulled out a win for Bainbridge. No. 1 play saw Ryan Wilson and John Tappan fighting to the last shot (6-2, 4-6, 4-6).

At No. 2, Bainbridge’s Bjorn Stanley and partner Liam Welch went to a third set super tiebreaker.
