Spartans split against Braves in tennis opener

BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans cheated the rain gods last week to complete their first Metro League tennis match of the season.

After a series of rainouts, Bainbridge’s varsity tennis team finally took the courts late last week to take on a tough squad from Bishop Blanchet.

The Bainbridge boys pulled out a victory 3-2, while the girls dropped their half of the match 1-4.

There were strong performances from the Spartans in boys singles by Eli Wagner (6-1, 6-1) over Will Merriman, and Maxwell Brown (6-2, 6-3) over Eddie Shelton.

In boys doubles, Jeremy Lipschutz and Aidan Sullivan won a nail-biter over Blanchet’s Charlie Loveland and Tommy Hune (6-3, 0-6, 7-5).

The BHS boys No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams lost close matches to the Braves. Alec Chan and Kawin Nikomborirak went down (0-6, 7-5) to Blake Cooper and John Bennett. Mason Ogden and Ryan Wilson fell in three sets to David Ochsner and Felix Schuler (6-3, 5-7, 7-10)

On the girls side for the Spartans, Ellie Van Slyke made her debut in the No. 1 singles spot and lost in a heartbreaker to Mia Singh (5-7, 7-5, 5-7).

Catherine Rolfes pulled out the lone victory for Bainbridge in the girls singles No. 2 spot, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Lucie O’Clair.

In girls doubles, Sophia Scott and Mallory Browne fell (6-3, 6-1) to Sam Courtney and Natalie Phillips. Fellow Spartans Marianne Milander and Maddy Britto dropped two sets (6-3, 6-2) to Maria Loveland and Cameron Ferguson. Katie Hughes and Morgan Wickline of BHS lost (6-0, 6-1) to Elize Heritage and Ashley Moriarty.
