SEATTLE – The Bainbridge Spartans had top 10 finishes in Cascadia Cup races during the two-day regatta at Sail Sand Point.
The Bainbridge High sailing team encountered exceedingly mixed weather conditions, which ranged from bad to blah.
Saturday started out with very light winds followed by a rainy storm front, which had quite a few boats capsize. Sunday races got off to a late start due to no wind at all in the morning.
When sailing finally started, sailors were challenged by shifty and very light winds.
At the Cascadia Cup, high school and collegiate teams are racing together, raising the competition for high scholars considerably. It is a perfect regatta for high school sailors who are considering joining a sailing team in college because they get to watch and mingle with college students.
Bainbridge entered two boats in the Gold fleet and two boats in the Silver fleet. Each fleet has an A and B division, which makes up one team.
Skippers Lindsay Campbell/Oliver Mitchell with crew Camden Lee/Lindsay Campbell and skipper Max Doane with Hunter Johnston made up one team in the Gold fleet, and skipper Dane Petrakis with crew Gus Beer and skipper Zach Cooper with crew Arianna Fiore, alternating with Clayton Marsh made up another Gold team.
One of the Silver fleets consisted of skipper Parker Hutchison with crews Chase Van Derrick/Jack Chapman and skipper Banning Jones with crew Peter Hall.
The second Silver fleet boat was manned by a variety of sailors. It consisted of skipper Camden Lee with crew Noah Maher and skipper Clayton Marsh with crew Jack Chapman. Former sailor Harry Saliba made a guest appearance and shared the Bainbridge boat but sailed for his Western Washington University team.
Overall the Bainbridge team performed well. In the combined score for high school and college boats, the two boats in the Gold fleet came in ninth and 10th. Looking at only high schools, they came in fifth and sixth place.
In the combined score for the Silver fleet, Bainbridge placed fourth and sixth. Looking at only the high school teams, the Silver fleet had a second and a third place.
