Spartans finish second in water polo tourney

The Bainbridge High varsity boys water polo team swam and shot their way to a second-place finish at a recent tournament at Curtis High School.

Taking place on two successive days, Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13, the tourney saw teams travel from outside the state to compete, as well as many more local squads as well.

On Saturday, in Game 1, BHS bested Southridge (Oregon) 17-5.

Goals for the Spartans were scored by Oskar Bannister (six), Jacques Defawe (three), Eamon Greathouse (three), Gabe Nathan (two) and Harrison Villella, David Burton and Guy Weibel (one each).

In Game 2, the Spartans fell to host team Curtis, 14-8. Game stats were not immediately available.

Then, in Game 3, the island squad rallied to handily defeat Sammamish-Interlake 13-4.

BHS goals were scored by Nathan (three), Bannister (three) Nate Lapin (two), Thomas Defawe (two), and Jacques Defawe, Jack Bullock and Greathouse (one each).

In the first game on Sunday, the semi-final matchup, Bainbridge bested Roosevelt 10-7.

Several familiar names rose to the top of the Spartan stats.

Lapin, Thomas Defawe and Bannister each scored two goals, and Villella, Nathan, Clay Jablonski and Greathouse each scored one.

Finally, in the championship game, Bainbridge was again clipped by Curtis — by just a single goal — for a final score of 8-7.

Spartan goals were scored by Lapin and Nathan (two each) and Villella, Jacques Defawe and Bannister (one apiece).

The team next hit the road for San Diego and a special invitational tournament that began Thursday, Oct. 17 and will conclude Sunday, Oct. 20.
