Spartans are Metro League champions in boys swimming

SNOHOMISH – The Metro League crown in boys swimming and diving will stay on Bainbridge.

The Spartans soaked the competition with first-place victories in eight of the 12 events, and picked up crucial big point wins in all three relay races.

Bainbridge dominated in its quest for a three-peat for the league title, and its first-place finish was nearly 200 points more than second-place finisher Lakeside.

BHS won with 793 points to Lakeside’s 601 at the championships, held Feb. 3-4 at the Snohomish Aquatic Center. O’Dea was third (527), followed by Garfield (462) and Roosevelt (459).

The Metro championship capped a perfect season for the Spartans in the Metro League, where they finished with a 7-0 record (7-1) overall.

The Spartans also broke two school records at the meet.

Sophomore Makai Ingalls made a new mark for BHS in the 100-yard backstroke with a preliminary time of 51.54, then won the finals race on Saturday in 52.09.

Fellow sophomore Spartan Garrett Waite also set a new school record in the 200-yard individual medley, with a finals time of 1:55.76, where he placed first.

Bainbridge was unstoppable in that event, with sophomore Kevin Houseman placing second in 1:59.20, and freshman Jude Wenker taking third in 1:59.99.

All told the Spartans finished the meet with 13 new state qualifying times/score.

The Bainbridge foursome of Waite, Houseman, Ingalls and Aidan Wagner started the second day of the meet with a finals win in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Spartans placed first with a time of 1:36.48.

The next first came in the next race, with Parker Bushey taking the Metro title in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.05.

Three other Spartans placed in the 200 free and added points to BHS’ team total.

Tristan Maass was seventh (1:52.48); Adrien Chaussabel was ninth (1:52.10) and Carter Hall was 10th (1:53.13).

Along with first, second and third places in the 200 IM, Bainbridge also had another top 10-finisher in the race when John Velisaris claimed sixth place in 2:05.24.

Ingalls also picked up a first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 21.54.

Teammates Aidan Wagner (23.11) and Henry Bacon (23.71) finished 10th and 18th, respectively.

Freshman Kiernan Liberman won second place in 1-meter diving, and finished with a finals score of 352.25.

Bushey was the Metro title winner in the 100-yard freestyle, with a first-place time of 48.66.

Andrew Witty was ninth in 50.74, Chaussabel placed 12th in 51.30 and Bacon claimed 15th in 52.72.

The Spartans also had top finishers in the 500-yard freestyle, with Sam Chapman placing third in 5:01.00. Maass was eighth in 5:13.54, and Mason Ogden finished in the 18th spot in 5:37.71.

Bainbridge’s other big relay wins came in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

In the 200 free, the foursome of Wagner, Bushey, Ingalls and Wenker took first in 1:27.73.

In the 400 free relay, the winning finals four consisted of Waite, Houseman, Bushey and Wenker, who swam to the Metro title with a time of 3:14.62, nearly four seconds faster than second-place finisher Bishop Blanchet.

Other standouts in the 100-yard backstroke included Waite, who finished third in 52.92, and Velisaris, who claimed sixth in 54.92. Will Thompson placed 19th in 1:02.45 for BHS.

Four Spartans also put points on the board for BHS in the 100-yard butterfly.

Houseman placed fourth for Bainbridge in the 100 fly with a finals time of 53.86.

Sam Chapman was 14th (58.86), followed by Max Eyrich (1:01.39) in 20th and Will Thompson (1:01.95) in 21st.

And in the last individual race of the meet, three Spartans cracked the Metro top 10.

Wenker placed second with a finals time of 1:01.21, while Hall was fourth in 1:01.68. Witty finished seventh in 1:02.44.

The Spartans will next compete in the Sea-King District 2 Championships on Feb. 10-11.

The swimming events are Friday and Saturday at Mary Wayte Pool on Mercer Island, while the diving competition is Saturday only at Juanita High School in Kirkland.
