Spartan offense showers Shorewood in fastpitch softball

SEATTLE – The Bainbridge Spartans stopped Shorewood 15-1 in five innings earlier this week in girls varsity fastpitch softball.

Bainbridge jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first, then started to pull away courtesy a five-run splurge in the second.

Shorewood got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third — that lessened the gap to 7-1 — but an eight-run exclamation mark by Bainbridge in the fifth inning was the final piece of punctuation in the Spartans’ schooling of the Thunderbirds.

The pitching/catching combo of Olivia Wikstrom and Maddie Loverich notched the victory for BHS, with Wickstrom picking up her first win on the mound this season with five strike-outs and no walks.

Loverich was pivotal at the plate, as well, for the Spartans. She went 2-for-2, with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Fellow Spartan Megan Spray went 1-for-2 on a two-RBI dinger.

Tiana Rabang was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and Natalie Gullatt was 1-for-1 with a double that brought two Spartans home.

Bainbridge evened its record at 1-1 with the win.

A continued BHS rebound rally was put off a few days by forces above, however.

The fastpitch team had another layoff Wednesday, when the Spartans’ home matchup against Bishop Blanchet was called off due to poor field conditions caused by the region’s somewhat moist weather.

Next up is a Friday meeting withw Seattle Prep here on the Rock; weather and field conditions permitting.
