Slippery Spartans State-bound in boys water polo

UNIVERSITY PLACE – The titanic tidal wave that is the Spartan boys varsity water polo season went crashing through the regional tournament last weekend at Curtis High School in University Place to continue onward and earn for the island team a spot at state this weekend.

The Bainbridge High team managed to break even at regionals, finishing the tournament with a 2-2 overall record.

First, the Spartans won handily against Rogers High, 21-6, and then were beaten by Puyallup, 10-9, “after a great comeback,” BHS Head Coach Kristen Gellert said.

In the third round, the Bainbridge boys bested Emerald Ridge in a stunning 17-0 shutout.

The fourth and final match saw the Spartans down against their old nemesis Gig Harbor, 6-3, but still state-bound.

The 2016 Boys Water Polo State Tournament will also take place at Curtis High School (8425 40th St. West, University Place) Thursday, Nov. 10 through Saturday, Nov. 12.

The Bainbridge squad first faced off against Bellevue at 8 p.m. Thursday. Results were unavailable when the Review went to press.

Gellert said the team would “then most likely” play Puyallup on Friday, Nov. 11.
