Season recaps reveals Bainbridge water polo record-breaker

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge High School junior Sam Kapel broke the boys water polo team season scoring record this year, nailing the net for 100 this season.

The previous record, as set by Paul Bang-Knudsen, had stood since 1988.

“The truly amazing part of that stat and accomplishment is that he’s far from being a ball hog,” said Spartan Head Coach Kristin Gellert. “He works really hard to be in the right position for shots and has had a very successful season, securing his role on the team.”

Kapel was also chosen to act as a team captain next year, along with Will Thompson and Miles Hogger.

The BHS boys varsity water polo team finished the year in fifth place at the state tournament earlier this month.

Kapel and senior co-captain James Muir were recognized for individual success as well. Both were named honorable mentions on the All-State team roster.

“I’m so proud of this team and each of the guys this year,” Gellert said. “It was such an honor to get to be a part of it and to hear so many coaches at state compliment our team and the trajectory of success that we’re on.”
