Kickers maul Sequim

"In a game suggesting its standing in district competition, the Spartans girls' soccer team blasted Sequim 8-0 Tuesday night on the home field.I was surprised, coach Susan Fowler said. Sequim, in the past, has been very strong.Bainbridge came on strong from the beginning, making two shots on the goal in the first six minutes of play. First blood was drawn by senior Laura Hume in the 14th minute of the first half.By the midpoint of the game, the score was 3-0, and within the first 14 minutes of the second half, the lead was pushed to 6-0.I think they got discouraged after that first flurry of goals in the second half, Fowler said. “In a game suggesting its standing in district competition, the Spartans girls’ soccer team blasted Sequim 8-0 Tuesday night on the home field.I was surprised, coach Susan Fowler said. Sequim, in the past, has been very strong.Bainbridge came on strong from the beginning, making two shots on the goal in the first six minutes of play. First blood was drawn by senior Laura Hume in the 14th minute of the first half.By the midpoint of the game, the score was 3-0, and within the first 14 minutes of the second half, the lead was pushed to 6-0.I think they got discouraged after that first flurry of goals in the second half, Fowler said.Hume led the scorers with three goals, one on a penalty kick after she was fouled in the box in the middle of the second half.Junior Fabrieanna Rezayat scored the final goal of the game and provided assists that led to the second quarter’s flurry. The drawback is that we face Port Angeles next, Fowler said. They’re one of the toughest teams and we weren’t able to see the holes in our defense against Sequim.Sequim, the only other 3A school in the Olympic League, is the Spartans’ competition for a slot in district playoffs.Fowler suggested the special teams in Sequim that feed the high school soccer program may be dwindling, resulting in a weaker varsity team.Since Sequim is the team whose record we need to beat to go to districts, we can tell early on that’s where we’re heading, she said.Spikers downed in road contestThe BHS volleyball team lost to 4A Olympia on Tuesday in a nerve-wracking five-game match.I think it was first away-game jitters, and they just folded, said coach Julie Miller. They just didn’t play well. The final score was 11-15, 15-6, 15-17, 15-13, 5-15.Sophomore Kristina Purdom, a starter, played the first three games but was taken ill in the fourth, another factor to which Miller attributed the loss.Purdom planned to play in Friday night’s game against Central Kitsap and was unsure whether her illness was due to flu or food poisoning. The spikers kept up the competition throughout, securing an overwhelming win in the second game, but collapsed in the fifth.Miller believes, however, that the loss was not indicative of the team’s abilities. We were obviously the better team, she said. We just didn’t play like it. There were a lot of misserves, a lot of bad passes. It just didn’t come out in our favor. The JV also lost their away-game to Olympic in three games: 14-16, 7-15, 1-15.They’re still coming together as a team, said coach Shane Schramling.I’ve also been playing people in different positions. “
