Hayes breaks Silver record in 200 IM

Sophomore swimming superstar Margaret Hayes broke the pool record for the 200-yard individual medley — set by Olympian Emily Silver in 2003 — during Bainbridge’s home swim meet against Garfield late last week.

The Spartans won the meet 106-80, and the matchup against the Bulldogs saw the Spartans break its fourth pool record of the year so far this season.

Hayes made a new mark in the 200 IM by finishing first in the event with a time of 2:06.16. The previous record in the Ray Williamson Pool at the Bainbridge Aquatic Center, set by Silver, was 2:06.24.

Interesting note: The state qualifying time in the 200 IM for the 3A championships is 3:13.45.

The Spartans won nine of 11 varsity races against Garfield, and Bryn Tiernan also placed first in 1-meter diving for BHS with a finals score of 259.50.

Bainbridge again dominated in the 200-yard IM relay, with a state qualifying time of 1:50.92. The relay team of Eden Michael, Emma Solseng, Hayes and Xaveria Rodriguez placed first in the race for BHS.

Zeya Korytko placed first for Bainbridge in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 2:09.55.

Solseng was also outstanding in the 50-yard freestyle, winning the varsity race in 25.44. Sister Spartan Sydney Sorenson was third in 26.64.

Rodriguez also had a state-qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle. She won the race in 54.59. Teammate Annalisia Tuinukaufe was third in 59.60.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Bainbridge foursome of Rodriguez, Naomi Howard, Michael and Hayes placed first in a state-qualifying time of 1:42.33.

Solseng picked up another win for the Spartans in the 100-yard backstroke. She finished first in 1:02.14.

Bainbridge grabbed another first place in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Hayes easily outpacing her Bulldog competitors with a time of 1:08.91 — more than 5 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

The Spartans final win of last Friday’s meet came in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Amelia Kimball, Tuinukaufe, Korytko and Solseng won the race with a time of 3:54.45.
