Crusaders close Spartan girls’ season 37-28

SEATTLE – That’s a wrap.

The Bainbridge High varsity girls basketball team was bested 37-28 by the Eastside Catholic Crusaders Friday, Feb. 10, in their third postseason showing in the Metro tournament.

It was a loser-out game, which left the Spartan season finito. It was also the team’s third game in three nights, after a win against Holy Names advanced the squad to an ill-fated second showing against Lakeside the night before.

The EC match was a close, low-scoring venture, said Spartan Head Coach Henry Guterson. The BHS team entered the second half up 12-11, but it was not to last.

“We absolutely battled but came up short,” he said.

“The team was an absolute joy to coach this season,” Guterson added. “It was a great mix of players who I always enjoyed being around and working with. We came a long ways since our first practice and I’m very proud of what we accomplished this season.

“Our seniors — Makaila Dean, Taylor Tye and Kiera Havill — will be missed,” he said.

The Spartans finished with an overall season record of 9-13 (5-10 in conference).

Things look especially upbeat for the island squad in the coming season, the coach said.

“We have five players who were either freshman or sophomores this season who got a lot of playing time and really improved this season,” he said. “They give us a bright future, especially if they work hard between now and next season: Grace Carson, Malia Peato, Marianne Milander, Olivia Wikstrom and Kendall Havill.”
