BHS runners dash to strong showing at UW invite

SEATTLE – Members of the informal, off-season Bainbridge Island Track Club tested their winter fitness against a nearly thousand-strong field of high school athletes from all over the Northwest at the University of Washington’s Indoor Invitational Track Meet last week, with several runners from the Rock notching formidable finishing times.

Most impressive, club officials said, was junior Taylee Undem’s soaring 18-5 finale in the long jump, a full 2 inches beyond her personal best (and the current Bainbridge High record, set when she took second place at the state championships last spring).

Most noteworthy in the running events was senior Wyatt Longley’s second place in the fastest of 13 heats of the 400-meter event, as he ran the tight curves of the 307-meter track in 50.88, just over his 49.77 PR (also a BHS record) that earned him third place at state in 2016.

Senior cross country captain Naomi von Ruden was second in her heat of the 3K in 10:58.07, a pace about 15 seconds under her 2-mile personal record, while teammate Jackie McVay’s 12:08.55 trimmed nearly 50 seconds off her indoor time last year.

Freshman Emma Brundige won her heat of the 400 in 61.13, an early February time faster than any BHS girl ran outdoors last spring, and junior Kenzie Korican’s 62.94 PR was nearly a full second under her 2016 best.

Senior Cole Brundige ran the severely curved 200 in 23.67, within a second of the fastest BHS time outdoors last year.

Additional awesome showings came in the 60-meter (Taylee Undem, 8.01); the 400 (Evan Kimmerlein, 55.03; Kyle Hammer, 56.95; and Audrey Weaver, 64.76); the 800 (Anna Scott, 2:39.72), the mile (Carlo Ruggiero, 4:42.13; Sebastian Belkin, 4:43.22; Jacob Carlson, 4:58.47; and Hannah Tonnsman, 5:23.52); and the 4×400 relays (Cole Brundige, Ruggiero, Kimmerlein and Longley, 3:37.21; and Korican, Weaver, McVay and Emma Brundige, 4:25.26).

Track club advisors said the invite was a fun way for student athletes to gauge their level of fitness for the quickly-approaching track season.
