Bainbridge falls short against Garfield footballers

The Bainbridge High School varsity football team (5-4) suffered through a 59-32 loss to Garfield (3-5) on the road in their first postseason outing Friday, Oct. 26.

It began as Bainbridge’s game, the Spartans up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Senior Spartan quarterback Gannon Winker scored two touchdowns, one on a 2-yard blast and the other on a 4-yard run, and the team managed one two-point conversion.

In the second, however, Garfield came back big and outscored the Spartans 20-0 to amass a 20-14 advantage going into the second half.

In a sickly third quarter, Bainbridge managed just one touchdown, on a 46-yard pass, and failed to nab the points conversion. Garfield, meanwhile, put up 26 points, cementing their lead.

The fourth saw a return to form by the island squad. They trailed by just one point in scoring (13-12), though it was far from enough to make the difference.

Winker managed 72 rushing yards in 10 carries. Alex Ledbetter finished with 29 yards in six for BHS.

Defensively, they each managed one tackle, no assists.
