Bainbridge bested by Rough Riders in final football fumble

SEATTLE – In the last outing of the year — an unexpected, conciliatory, postseason appearance — the Bainbridge High varsity football team was defeated 43-14 by Roosevelt High Friday, Nov. 4 in Seattle.

The loss dropped the Spartans’ overall season record to 1-11.

It was the final game of the year, team officials said, organized in the traditional way often engaged in by programs not competing in the postseason. Coaches call comparable programs and arrange a final game, giving the players one more outing before they hang up their cleats for the winter.

“A lot of teams who don’t make the playoffs will call around after the play-in games and try and find a comparable opponent for a 10th game,” said team spokesman John Bierly.

Having bested Bainbridge, the Rough Riders ended the year with an overall record of 5-7-2.

Bainbridge played best in the middle quarters against Roosevelt, putting nothing up on the board in the first as the Rough Riders sped ahead to lead 12-0.

In the second, BHS managed seven, while Roosevelt put up another 12.

In the third stanza, the Spartans again managed seven and kept their opponents to seven, as well.

In the final quarter of the game things were the same as the first, with RHS sprinting ahead by another 12 points and BHS kept out of the endzone.

Spartan sophomore Gavin Winker managed to pass 65 yards against RHS. He also led the team’s rushing efforts with 29 yards.

Ethan Peloquin was the night’s top receiver. He ended the game with 31 yards.

Sophomore kicker Tanner Shattuck went 2-for-2 for Bainbridge.

Disappointing as the season record was for the Spartans and Head Coach Jeff Rouser in his debut year at the helm, the team was not unrecognized around the league, and several BHS players were appointed to All-Metro Team rosters.

Senior running back Eric Jung, Peloquin, and junior punter Nathan Eaton were all named among the Second Team Offensive list. Senior inside linebacker Sam Roth, junior outside linebacker Kyle Bierly and junior corner back Christian Nonga Kingombe were among the Second Team Defensive selections.
