Bainbridge baseball begins with a bang

SAMMAMISH – The Bainbridge Spartans defeated the Eastside Catholic Crusaders 4-1 Monday night behind the pitching trio of Garrett Aichele, Liam Hatakenaka and James McMurray.

After a slow start, the Bainbridge High varsity baseball team rallied in the fifth, jump started by Ian Matthews’ triple into the right field corner.

After a walk earned by Theo Colgan, Ethan Schulte knocked in the tying run with his second hit of the game. Subsequent hits by Brooks Wallace and a bases-clearing double by Matthew Spence gave the Spartans all the scoring they would need to secure the win.

The game was the first played by the Spartans this season, as the wet weather had cancelled their first three games.

Despite Bainbridge being the home team, the game was played at Eastside Catholic due to the persistent unplayable condition of the Spartans’ home field.

The island team’s next two outings were slated to be on the road, before returning home to host North Kitsap at 4:15 p.m. Monday, March 27.
