3A state swim meet: Bainbridge advances to state championship in seven events

Bainbridge advanced to the 3A swim state championship in seven events at the King County Aquatic Center Friday.

The top eight finishers in each event advanced to Saturday’s championship final. The ninth through 16th-place finishers advanced to the consolation final.

Andrew McCarthy continued his success in the 500-yard freestyle by shaving two seconds off of his district championship time (4:43.54) to finish first overall with a time of 4:41.40. McCarthy finished nearly a second and a half ahead of second-place finisher Steve Sholdra of Renton (4:42.97).

The Spartans, who placed third at the SeaKing District meet, won three District titles last week: the 100-yard fly, the 500-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of David Ortyn, Jenkins, McCarthy and Colin Chupik just missed its district championship time (3:17.11), placing second in the preliminary round with a time of 3:18.50.

The 400-yard freestyle relay squad also swam the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing eighth with a time of one minute, 43 seconds and improving on their district time (1:44.12).

Colin Chupik won his heat in the 100-yard freestyle (48.76) and advanced to the championship final with a third-place overall finish.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Ortyn finished second in his heat and seventh overall in with a time of 1:57.62. Cody Jenkins placed 17th with a time of 2:06.33.

McCarthy won his heat in the 200-yard freestyle. McCarthy was in fourth after the first 50 yards, third after 100 yards and second going into the last lap, and placed fifth overall.

Chupik finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.72 second and will compete in the consolation final tomorrow.

Ortyn qualified for the championship round for a third time with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (53.70). Jenkins placed 10th with a time of 54.85 and Zach Morrow finished 19th (58.86).

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Morrow, Jeff Yalung, Blake Harper and Sam Pollock finished 14th with a time of 1:36.33.

Yalung finished in 1:05.96 in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing 19th.
