Playoff Updates: Baseball, softball teams heading for state

BHS BASEBALL

Feldtman leads Spartans into semifinals.

The BHS baseball team earned a berth in the state tournament semifinals at Safeco Field with a pair of wins Saturday.

The Spartans defeated Columbia River 5-4 in the first game as Colin Feldtman had a grand slam home run and struck out 11. The team came back to win the nightcap against Highline 9-4.

Mario McLaughlin induced a bases-loaded double play ground ball in the bottom of the sixth to preserve a one-run Spartan lead. Tanner Bogardus' leadoff homer in the top of the seventh ignited a five-run rally to put the game away.

The Spartans face top-ranked Timberline at 1 p.m. Friday in Seattle. A win would put them in the title game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

BHS SOFTBALL

Girls qualify for state tourney

The Spartan softball team qualified for this week's state tournament in Tacoma by placing third in SeaKing District play last Thursday and Friday. Bainbridge faces two-time defending champion Kennedy at 9 a.m. Friday.

The team opened district play with a 10-0 win against Sammamish on Thursday. The Spartans lost Friday to second-ranked Juanita 2-1 on a controversial safe call at home plate in the bottom of the seventh that tied the score. The Rebels won in the eighth on a triple and bloop single.

The Spartans rebounded later that afternoon with a pair of victories, 12-2 over Mt. Si and 10-2 over Holy Names.

BOYS LACROSSE

Spartans open with easy win.

The boys lacrosse team swamped Northshore 21-4 on Thursday in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs. The team faces Issaquah Wednesday, with the winner playing in the championship game Saturday.

TRACK AND FIELD

Six girls going to state.

Anna Kaminski leads five teammates into this week's 2A-3A-4A state track and field championships at Tacoma's Mt. Tahoma high school following the SeaKing district meet last Wednesday and Friday.

Action begins on Thursday and continues through Saturday afternoon. Kaminski won the discus throw. The 4x400 relay team of Sylvia Stellmacher, Courtney Odell, Pearl Terry and Isabel Ferguson finished third, and Ferguson also qualified in the high jump and 800. Maddy Sheldon was fifth in the 100.
