North Kitsap gymnasts won three of four individual events and had the top scorer in all-around, but Bainbridge had more depth in defeating the Vikings 160.30 to 150.75 in the season’s final dual meet last Friday. Kingston (113.35) and Central Kitsap (30.05) also competed, as the Spartans concluded another undefeated regular season and ran their winning streak to 112.

The team now turns its attention to today’s Metro League championships at Nathan Hale and the district tournament a week from tomorrow at Sammamish High School. The Spartans are heavily favored to win Metro, and, according to coach Cindy Guy, “have a good shot” at winning district.

Emerging as district champions would mark a major milestone for the team, which despite its long tradition of success has just the 2005 district trophy to its credit. Guy believes the team’s main competition should come from Mt. Si, which consistently scores in the 156-160 range. Buoyed by a five-year best of 171 in December, the team BHS has averaged just over 162 points during the season.

But Guy notes that the team will see different judges at the district meet, which she felt might have accounted for part of the relative closeness of Friday’s score. Another factor was the absence of Kathleen Callahan and Annie Zuckerman, two of the Spartans’ top gymnasts.

“It was fun to see what we could do without them,” said Guy. “It was a chance for others to step and see what they could do.”

For the Spartans, Adrienne Palay and Rachel Kaminer tied for second in all-around with scores of 32.6, with Katie Mathews fourth with 32.4.

Kaminer (8.8) and Mathews (8.7) went one-two in beam, with Eva Fazzini (fourth, 8.0) and Palay and Talia Weiss (7.9) tied for fifth in the Spartans’ strongest event. By contrast, Kaminer, Weiss and Mathews all tied for sixth in the vault with 7.8 points as the only Bainbridge gymnasts to place.

Palay was second in bars with 7.5, Weiss third with 7.35, Kaminer fourth with 7.2, and Mathews sixth with 6.8. Mathews (second, 9.1), Anne Schwartz (third, 9.05), and Palay (fifth, 9.0) were Spartan placers in floor exercise.
