First win comes late for Bainbridge gymnasts

WEST SEATTLE - The Spartans kicked off the gymnastics season with a somewhat unexpected walk-away win on the road against Chief Sealth and West Seattle.

Bainbridge was first with 135.5 points, pushing West Seattle into second with 128.6.

Chief Sealth was third, tallying 114.5.

The Spartans entered the season with a core of seasoned veterans surrounded by some promising new talent, so the walk-away win came about because the Spartans actually walked away before they found out they won.

In an interesting twist, Bainbridge had to head for home before the final scores were tabulated in the Dec. 6 matchup, and they departed with the riddle of who was in first.

“We didn’t have the scoring when we left the gym,” said Spartan Coach Cindy Guy. “We found out we won yesterday; we were pretty happy with that.”

Although Bainbridge’s All Around gymnasts carried the day, Guy said she saw a lot that she liked in Bainbridge’s season debut.

“Overall I was really proud of how they all did,” Guy said.

“We had many kids who had not done gymnastics before and a lot who had not competed at the varsity level,” she said.

That said, Guy noted she was impressed with how they presented themselves and handled the pressure of their first meet. There were some surprises mixed in: the Spartans had abbreviated warmups; the meet was short a judge; the order of events was changed; and the competition was held on wrestling mats.

“They adapted really well,” Guy said.

Miller Shor placed first for Bainbridge in the bars, with a score if 6.65. Sarah Rice was second (6.2) for the Spartans and Juliana Hinckley placed fourth (6.1).

Rice was also first in the beam, floor exercise and vault, while Shor placed second in those events (tying with Hinkley in the vault at 7.8).

“Overall Miller and Sara both had a nice meet, and Juliana Hinkley Hinkley really came through for us — I was really proud of her performance. She did really well in all four of her events.”

Indeed, Rice was first in All Around scores. She finished with 29.5 points, while Shor was second with 29.25, and Hinkley, third, at 26.8.
