Bainbridge wrestlers go the mat in early test

POULSBO - The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team will officially begin its season on the road with a match at Kingston High Saturday, Dec. 7.

However, even before that, the team was hard at work at the first tournament of the year at North Kitsap High Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The Takedown Tournament offers participating schools a chance to scope each other out and scrimmage, giving wrestlers a chance to test their takedowns and maneuvers in a real-world environment.

“The Takedown Tournament is really a glorified practice,” explained Spartan Head Coach Dan Pippinger. “It was good to get some guys mat time with other teams who have different techniques and different levels of aggressiveness.”

Pippinger said the tournament got off to a rough start for the Spartans, but the athletes quickly settled in and proved themselves on the mat.

“I felt that we were a bit tentative in our first round,” he said. “But as the tournament went on, we became more aggressive and confident, especially when [the wrestlers] were able to be successful using what they have been working on in practice.”
