JV Spartans nipped by Liberty in girls soccer
The Spartan junior varsity girls soccer team was edged 1-0 by the Liberty Patriots JV team in the season opener for both teams Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The Spartans drew a tough opponent for their first game; the JV Patriots finished last year with an impressive 15-1 record.
The game was decided in the first half. Kendall Aramaki booted the game's only goal for the Patriots in the first five minutes of play.
Armaki, a freshman, was playing in her first game for Liberty.
She scored on a four-pass combination from Kimmi Chavez, and kicked in the game-winner off a rebound on the final tap from Chavez.
"It was amazing," Armaki said. "It was like, one, two, three, four and then I got it off the rebound."
The Spartans nearly came back at the end. Bainbridge put late pressure on the Patriot goal in the last minute of play but failed to capitalize.
Bainbridge will play its next game on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 10 against Central Kitsap at Gordon Field in Bremerton. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
