Gear Grinders finish in number two spot in state

The Bainbridge Gear Grinders finished the season in second place in Washington high school mountain biking.

The Gear Grinders, Bainbridge Island’s coed high school-level mountain bike team, finished the race season in second place overall after the final race on May 19 at Washougal.

The Gear Grinders had 10 riders in action on a difficult course in the hills above the Columbia River.

Anika Vroom was fourth for Bainbridge on the day and finished her season in second place overall in the girls intermediate category.

The Gear Grinders’ Lydia Weyand made the podium in third place in the girls varsity category and finished third overall for the year in that category.

Lucas Weyand finished in third place on the day in boys varsity and Soren Ferguson finished fourth in boys junior varsity.

All of the team’s other racers rode hard, including Edward Wilson, Schuyler Westerhout, Stasi Burzycki, Kieran Patrick, Albert Ragsdale and Dylan Karter.

The races were run by Washington Student League, a program of the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.
