Sasha Carter of Bainbridge Island has been named to the 2013 Big Sky 2013 all-conference second team in tennis.

Carter is a sophomore on the University of Montana tennis team.

Montana finished the season 15-8 and went 9-1 in Big Sky matches. The Grizzlies defeated Northern Arizona in the tournament semifinals to extend their winning streak to seven before falling to the Hornets in the tournament championship match for the second straight season.

Carter earned All-Big Sky honors for the first time this year. She finished 16-2 in singles in regular-season Big Sky matches, and 14-4 in doubles.

Carter had the team’s strongest finish to the season.

She won her final six singles matches, and that included a sound 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sacramento State freshman Olivia Boija in the Big Sky tournament championship match.

“Sasha has started to play at a level I haven’t seen before,” said Montana Coach Steve Ascher. “She is really thinking through the moment, and that’s brought a completeness and another level of maturity to her game.

“It’s been really fun to watch that level of tennis jump out of her and watch how she has handled herself,” he said.

Montana had a total of five players honored by the Big Sky when the league announced its 2013 all-conference teams.

“It’s a testament to the whole team and the quality of our depth that we had that many players recognized by the coaches in the conference,” Ascher said. “I think they understood the quality of the season we put together and knew that wasn’t the result of just one or two players.”
