Sparts can’t get over O’Dea

The Bainbridge wrestling team got off to a good start against O’Dea, but the Fighting Irish had too much experience, defeating the Spartans 48-21 Wednesday night at O’Dea.

“O’Dea showed that they were a bit tougher than we were,” co-head coach Dan Pippinger said. “Our technique is OK, but it’s just a matter of getting some toughness, and that’s part of being young. They’re still learning.”

Matt Ritualo and Patrick Macala got it started in the 119 and 125 pound categories with wins over BJ Pelegrini and Mike Beekstad by pinfall and decision, respectively.

But the next three wrestlers for Bainbridge lost, and Ian Brooks’ pinfall win over Andres Munoz, Eli Narte’s win by forefit and Keith Robert’s pinfall victory wasn’t enough.

Brian Robert lost a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Jalonn Williams when he scored on an escape. The next two wrestlers were pinned in 1:30 or less.

Even with the loss, Pippinger feels the younger wrestlers are starting to turn the corner, noting that sophomores Ritualo and Robert and JV wrestler Mark King are making their mark.

“We expect (Ritualo) to be a points scorer for us,” he said. “Keith probably had his best match because he was so aggressive. That was exciting to see.”

Brooks, who admitted that he had a “really bad match” at the Squalicum Invite, feels the team is in a position to improve.

“I’ve seen some really great things out of the young guys,” he said.

Bainbridge hosts Bishop Blanchet next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
