Tumblers roll over Metro foes

The host Bainbridge Spartans made shambles of the Metro League gymnastics championship meet Friday night, accumulating a season-high 170.125 points in the process.

Led by sophomore Brooke Nall’s school record all-around 36.8, the Spartans ran away from their nearest competitors Nathan Hale (140.175) and West Seattle (128.250) for the second straight year.

Nall won all four events – beam, floor exercise, bars, and vault – for the coveted all-around Metro crown. But coach Cindy Guy called it “a total team effort, with everyone contributing in their events.”

So complete was the victory that the locals finished 1-6 in two events, their specialty the bars and on the floor, and allowed only one other competitor from Hale to finish 5th and 6th in two different events.

Junior Dana Cuykendall, a state qualifier last season, finished second overall, and senior Emily Roche, who appeared to be almost fully recovered from a nagging toe injury, placed 3rd in the all-around category, with sophomore Brittany Belt 4th.

The Bainbridge team heads to Regionals at Sammamish High School in Bellevue this weekend, needing to finish in the top two in their session to move on to state.

Guy said her team this week will work to “increase the difficulty of their routines to score even higher,” a necessity with increased competition from schools from the Kingco Conference.
