The gymnastics team finished its regular season undefeated on Friday, scoring 172.30 points to North Kitsap’s 156.30 and Nathan Hale’s 142.30.

“We wanted to hit a little better,” said coach Cindy Guy. “We were hoping for a school record in front of the home fans. But we had a couple of falls. Maybe it was the stress of the last home meet.”

More than 100 spectators turned out for the meet in the Commodore gym.

Though the Spartans didn’t break the team school record, Dana Cuykendall and Brooke Nall set new individual school standards. Cuykendall scored 9.5 on beam, while Nall recorded a bars score of 9.3.

Nall rode her big bars score to win the all-around title with 35.6 points as the Spartans scored a near-sweep.

Stephanie Hylen was second with 34.6, Emily Roche third with 34.5, Cuykendall placed fourth with 34.3, Carrie Kirkpatrick sixth with 33.1 and Brittany Belt seventh with a 32.7.

Next up is Saturday’s Metro League meet at Ballard.

“I feel confident about winning it,” said Guy. “We’ve hired a judge to come in this week and critique our routines, because we want to have the highest seed for regionals and seeding is based on how many points we score at Metro.”

She notes that there’s a lot of pressure at regionals, because only two teams go to state and the Spartans will face traditional powers Sehome and Issaquah.
