Season starts for Special Olympics

February 25, 2013 · Updated 10:57 AM

Special Olympics track and field athletes on Bainbridge Island are looking at the start of a new season — and soon.

The 2013 spring season will begin on Saturday, March 9 and continue with practices, each and every Saturday and Wednesday to follow through May 29.

Competition is open to all individuals with an intellectual disability, 8 years of age or older. New athletes must complete and provide an “application for participation” (AFP, available at www.SOWA.org, click on “athlete”) prior to participating. The application requires a doctor’s input.

The Bainbridge Special Olympics team will practice at the Bainbridge High School track facility, from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays.

The mandatory regional competition is Saturday, April 27 and the Summer Games are set for May 31-June 2.
