Sasha Carter of Bainbridge Island has been selected as the Big Sky Player of the Week.
Carter, a sophomore on the University of Montana womens tennis team, was chosen for her performance in Montana's road trip to Grand Forks on Feb. 1-2.
Carter went 2-0 in her singles matches and then paired up with teammate junior Maddy Murray to pick up two wins for Montana in doubles matches.
“Sasha has done a great job over the last year of continuing to raise the bar and improve upon her game,” said Montana Head Coach Steve Ascher. “This is great recognition for her hard work and a reward for the team as everyone competed well this weekend.”
On Friday, Carter defeated her opponent from Big Sky Conference newcomer North Dakota at the No. 2 singles spot. The sophomore downed Callie Ronkowski in two sets 6-1, 6-1. Then Carter and Murray helped clinch the doubles point for Montana by securing an 8-2 win at the No. 3 doubles spots.
Against South Dakota State on Saturday, Carter played the No. 1 spot in singles and beat Ffion Davies 6-3, 6-1. Then she went on to claim a 8-1 win with Murray at the No. 2 doubles spot.
“I think this weekend went well for the entire team, not just me,” Carter said.
“I felt like my matches went well. We have all been working so hard and now it's paying off. This weekend was definitely fun,” she said.
This is Carter's first time being honored as Player of the Week.
Others that were nominated for the award were Marian Tangarife (Idaho State), Paulina Lopez (Montana State), Johanna Vang (Northern Arizona), Claire Uhle (Northern Colorado), Afton Staheli (Southern Utah) and Kristi Elmer (Weber State).
