The Island Stars are on the lookout for new players.

The 13U select baseball team, who won the Sandy Koufax 13U state championship this summer, is holding a tryout Sept. 23 at the high school baseball field from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All players who are or will be 14 or under as of April 30, 2008 are encouraged to attend.

Those who make it will take part in off-season fitness and baseball training beginning in November at a yet to be determined location in northern Kitsap.

The team will then return to play in the Sandy Koufax league along with local tournaments in the spring and national tournaments over the summer.

The training is not intended to conflict with off-season sports.

Jeff Bowman will return as coach.

Also holding a tryout is the 12U Island Niners on the 23rd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hidden Cove Park.

13 players that are 12 and younger as of April 30, 2008 will be selected to participate in fitness and baseball training along with four local tournaments to prepare for another trip to the Cooperstown Dreamspark tournament in New York in early August.

10 to 11 players will be selected at the tryout, with two to three slots left open for players who improve over the Little League season.

The final roster selection will be determined at a later point in time.

Bill Ackerley and Mike Sheehan will be the coaches.
