Spartans fall in first playoff game

The Spartans battled the Chieftains to an early draw in Bainbridge’s first playoff football game last Friday, but Columbia River rose in the second half to win, 27-9, at Chieftain Stadium in Vancouver.

The Spartans played Columbia River even in the first quarter, ending at a 3-all tie at the end of the first stanza after Sam Kallas kicked a 36-yard field goal.

The Chieftains continued with their scoring near the close of the second quarter, however, adding a touchdown for a 9-3 lead with 15 seconds to go.

In the third, the Chieftains only widened the gap after tacking on a field goal, then another running touchdown with three minutes left in the quarter. Columbia River then ran it in for the two-point conversion.

But the island team still had some offense left to unleash going into the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback Kyle Jackson rushed forward and managed to claim one last touchdown for his team rounding their score out at 9 points. The Chieftains also landed a touchdown in the final stretch of the game.

The Spartans finished with 151 yards on 49 carries.

Max Wysong led Bainbridge in rushing; he had 15 carries for 49 yards. Matt Stone had five carries for 28 yards, and Paimon Jaberi carried 11 times for 31 yards.

Jaberi threw seven-for-21 and finished with 60 yards and one interception.

Nick Bierly led the defense for Bainbridge with 10 unassisted tackles, including two tackles for a loss that set the Chieftains back 12 yards.

Dan Drewry had six unassisted tackle and a sack for a 6-yard loss.
