Bainbridge Island’s Veronica Saez has been having a standout year as a goalkeeper for the Fairfield University women’s soccer team.

Saez, a redshirt freshman, earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference “Rookie of the Week” award after the Stags had a 2-0 week earlier this month to claim the top spot in the MAAC standings.

Saez posted her third clean sheet of the year as the Stags defeated visiting conference foe Niagara University 2-0 on Oct. 5. The rookie keeper stopped all three shots that the Purple Eagles put on cage, including two in the second half, to earn her third win of the year.

The “Rookie of the Week” honor is a familiar title for Saez. She started the season by winning the award in two consecutive weeks, first for outstanding play against Holy Cross, and then for an impressive effort in the matchup against the University of Maine.

Against Maine, Saez held the Black Bears scoreless through 110 minutes of action and made a career-high nine stops. It was her second shutout in just her third collegiate game. Saez stopped five shots in the second half alone and then stymied the only shot that Maine put on goal in the overtime periods.

Saez had a seven-save effort at Holy Cross. She played all 100:45 and didn’t give up a goal over the last 70 minutes of play. She also stopped the one shot she faced in overtime.

Fairfield has clinched a berth in the upcoming MAAC Championship and began the final weekend of league play tied for first place with 18 points, at 6-1, with Marist.
