Bainbridge Island Dive Club earns medals at Region 10
Members of the Bainbridge Island Dive Club had strong showings in the annual United States Diving Junior Olympic Region 10 diving championships.
The championships were held March 2-4 in Beaverton, Ore., and included divers from Washington, northern and central California, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Alaska and Hawaii. The top six divers in each category were selected at the meet to dive at the Winter Western National Championships.
More than 160 divers attended the event, and the meet had divers with a range of skills from elite to returning national champions.
In the age 12-13 girls event, Cameron Rouser, from Kingston, placed 19th on three-meter with a finishing score of 174.55, and 25th with a score of 144.5 on the one-meter. Zora Opalka, in her first meet, placed 25th on three-meter with a score of 138.05, and 27th on one-meter scoring 114.75.
In the age 16-18 girls event, Kittie Cooper finished 46th on both three-meter and one-meter springboard while teammate Shannon Engelbrecht placed 23rd on three-meter with a score of 329.00, and 32nd on one-meter with a score of 144.30.
In the age 12-13 boys event, Dylan Garthwaite competed for the first time and finished in eighth place on both three-meter and one-meter boards, scoring 172.60 and 204.30. He walked away with medals for both events, something only the top 12 divers in each event receive.
In the age 14-15 boys event, Coleman Mitchell placed eighth on three-meter with a score of 259.20, ninth on one-meter with a score of 261.75, and second on platform with a score of 201.35. He returned home with a medal from each event.
