Andrew McCarthy repeats as 500 freestyle champ; Spartans take fifth

FEDERAL WAY - Andrew McCarthy dominated the field in the 500 freestyle.

The junior repeated as champion with an All-American consideration time of 4:33.09 Saturday at the 3A state meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Andrew McCarthy becomes the first Bainbridge athlete to repeat as champion at the state meet since Olaf Olson won back to back diving titles in 2006 and 2007 and the first swimmer since Austin Hallet did it in 2008 to post an All-American time.

Andrew also took fourth in the 200 freestyle.

Colin Chupik turned in two strong swims in his two events with a sixth place finish in the 50 freestyle and a fifth place finish in the 100 freestyle.

Spencer Alpaugh took seventh in the 200 individual medley and eighth in the 500 freestyle.

Todd McCarthy won the consolation finals of the 500 freestyle while Alex Nowjack took seventh in the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke.

The 200 medley relay team of Todd McCarthy, Jared Bell, Andrew McCarthy and Colin Chupik won the consolation finals while the 400 freestyle relay team of Todd McCarthy, Alpaugh, Andrew McCarthy and Chupik took fourth in the 400 freestyle finals.

Bainbridge placed fifth with 147 points, just missing out on a trophy. Seattle Prep took fourth with 158 points while Mercer Island won its sixth straight title.

In gymnastics, Adrienne Palay placed 11th on the balance beam finals with a score of 8.75.
