Spartan athletics are in full swing at Bainbridge High School as eight teams kick off the fall season. While five veteran head coaches return, three first-year coaches have stepped into new roles as leaders of the golf and water polo programs. With just a week of practice under their belts, BHS’ head coaches share their insight on the upcoming season.

Coach: Kristin Swanson, first year

2009 record: 2-12-1

Post-season result: Seventh at state

Seniors graduated: Lex Burgin, Beau Donnan, Andy Geilfus, Mickey Keefe, Mike Kilbane, Ian Layton, Ian Mitchell, Bjorn Ostling, Sam Pollock and Adam Ruby

Returning starters: Blake Harper (goalie) and Grant Dunaway

Captains: Harper, Jared Bell and Dunaway

Contest to look forward to: “Last year the varsity barely squeeked out a win in the state tournament against Shorewood, so it will be nice to try to better that this year. We’ve always had a rivalry with Mercer Island, so that is one to look forward to.”

What needs to happen for the Spartans to be successful in their first contest against Kentridge on Sept. 10: “To be ready for this game we will have to work on a few offensive strategies, and quickly master our defense. Although we lost all but two of our varsity players, I think we have some great potential with this group of guys and I look forward to seeing what they can do.”
