BHS fall sports preview | Girls soccer

Spartan athletics are in full swing at Bainbridge High School as eight teams kick off the fall season. While five veteran head coaches return, three first-year coaches have stepped into new roles as leaders of the golf and water polo programs. With just a week of practice under their belts, BHS’ head coaches share their insight on the upcoming season.

Coach: Scott Druker, fourth year

2009 record: 14-6-3 overall (4-3-3 in Metro)

Post-season result: First round 3A state tournament, 1-0 loss to No. 1 Kennedy Catholic

Seniors graduated: Christina Crowley, Maddie Ginder, Hallie Swan, Melissa Hoshizaki, Shea Kenyon, Devon Denis, Anastasia Tschida, Lauren Silvers and Haylee Baker

Players with varsity experience: Kendyl Daniels, Haley Story, Emma Vukic, Kelly Crane, Morgan Moniz, Bryton Wildsmith, Maddy Midas, Sarah Berchinski and Veronica Saez

Captain: Kendyl Daniels

Deepest position: “I would have to say forwards. That’s probably the strongest veteran group.”

Contest to look forward to: “Lakeside is usually competitive, and Holy Names was the Metro champ last year, so they would be the teams to beat.”

What needs to happen for the Spartans to be successful in their first contest against Newport Sept. 7: “We created opportunities [last season] but we’ve got to finish better. We lacked some goals and that’s what knocked us out. That’s definitely going to be a stronger focus – continue to do our controlled game. High pressure, that’s my style.”
