The Bainbridge Island Review of July 23 ran a page 3 political feature written by Celeste Cornish, the North Kitsap Herald editor about candidates Mr. DeBoer and Ms. Appleton vying for Position 1, Legislative District 23. The same article appeared in the North Kitsap Herald.

What I find troubling and very odd about the DeBoer/Appleton articles are the fact their general election day is 103 days away. In contrast, the Position 2 23rd District primary race involving Messrs Olsen and Winters and Ms. Rolfes is just days away from the ballots dropping in the primary race.

While Editor Cornish can write about whatever she wants, the voters deserve knowledge about the candidates in the upcoming Position 2 race. In that race, the incumbent has had ample opportunity to send taxpayer-funded mailers to the 120,000 constituents touting the incumbent’s legislative actions. Neither of the other challengers have been given a word in your paper.

What information have the editors provided about the Position 2 race that is in play? Not a word. Failing to cover the primary race at hand and instead talking about the race 103 days out is a clear sin of omission.

Editors Cornish and Anstine, let’s keep the political playing field fair and level. Your readers expect and deserve nothing less.

James M. Olsen, candidate

23rd LD, Position 2
