In a sport where there is nowhere to hide if you make a mistake or no shoulder to cry on if you lose, the Mighty Spartans of Bainbridge Island have much to be proud of.

Beginning the season with eight healthy wrestlers, Coach Dan Pittenger and his staff embarked on a season knowing that their chances of winning the Metro championship were next to impossible. As the season progressed, the chances of winning even one match against any of the other 11 schools was slim because of forfeitures.

The team won one dual meet and in the league championships two wrestlers won top honors and three others qualified for the regional tournament.

At the regionals, we had wrestlers finish first, second, third and fourth. All four qualified for berths at the State Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

This past weekend, two Bainbridge wrestlers carried the team to the highest team finish from the Metro League and the region! The team finished 19th among 57 schools in the 3A State Championships.

Kudos to Eli Narte, who placed fourth in the 140-pound division, and Mason Remy, who finished fourth at 189 pounds and is also a member of the State Wrestling All-Academic Team with a 3.96 GPA.

Mike Furman had one victory at 145 pounds and 130-pound Alec Griewe competed as a freshman.

Thank you, coaches and young men for a very respectable season.

Phillip Narte
