To the editor:

I recently had the opportunity to talk with Bainbridge Island School Board President Mike Spence over coffee at the Treehouse Cafe.

Needless to say he impressed me. Mike has a real understanding and appreciation of our island community. He recognizes the professionalism of our teachers and staff and the achievements of our students.

Mike also understands that in every decision-making process not everyone will be pleased. What I most like about Mike is his leadership style that places solutions to problems over affixing blame.

When I was still teaching, a colleague posted this quote in our faculty room:

“A boss creates fear, a leader confidence. A boss fixes blame, a leader corrects mistakes. A boss knows all, a leader asks questions. A boss makes work drudgery, a leader makes it interesting.”

Mike is an unquestionably a leader and deserves to continue serving this community as a member of our school board. I urge all residents of Bainbridge Island, whether you have children in our schools or not, to vote for Mike Spence.
