Big, fat, expensive failure | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

The city manager/council form of government for Bainbridge Island has been a big, fat, expensive failure. Two city managers in the past two years costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for severance packages and replacement searches shows the system is broken.

It’s time to go back to the old mayor/council form of government. Then when you don’t like how the city is governed you just vote him or her out. No messing around with multi-digit severance and replacement packages. You know who to blame or who to praise.

I also found it strange that in the manager/council setup one of the council members becomes mayor, sort of a first among equals.

A real mayor would have been responsible for overseeing and directing the police department. Seems the police department has gone rogue during the same period as the manager/council system. Some things need a single boss rather than a committee that never gets to a final decision.

Let’s put it on the ballot again and go back to the mayor/council form of government. I didn’t vote for the manager/council proposal the last time and feel vindicated. It’s shown itself to be a total failure.
