Letters to the Editor

Cancellation of 2012 Boys & Girls Club event caused by other needs | Letters | Feb. 17

For seven of the last eight years, the Boys & Girls Club of Bainbridge Island has organized the Bainbridge Island Half Marathon. The run’s popularity and impressive community support have made it a success.

Unfortunately, the Boys & Girls Club is unable to sponsor the run this year, and we believe we should share the basis for this difficult decision with you.

The decision was not made lightly and the club’s staff and board realize that canceling the run will be a significant disappointment to the runners and volunteers who look forward to the run each year.

Our decision for 2012 focused on one primary concern – significant time, energy and resources are needed to coordinate a successful half marathon.

We determined these resources could be better directed to improving the programs and services offered to our 350 young members.

The increased need for the services provided by the club in these difficult economic times, coupled with constraints on available resources, makes it even more important for us to focus on serving the needs of our young members and their families.

Even though cancellation is disappointing, the Boys & Girls Club and our community have a great deal to be proud of.

With 17 Presidential Youth Volunteer Service Award recipients (http://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/), regionally recognized innovative programming (http://www.king5.com/vdeo?id=131767338&sec=549122), and a proven commitment to serve any young person regardless of financial need, the Boys and Girls Club’s future is brighter than ever.

Come see for yourself at our upcoming Faces of the Future Gala at IslandWood on Saturday, April 21.

Proceeds from this event help to ensure that no kid is turned away at our door, regardless of their family’s financial situation. We sincerely thank everyone in our community for supporting the Club.

Please contact Pat Murray, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Bainbridge Island, with any questions regarding the Bainbridge Island Half Marathon or the Faces of the Future Gala at 855-8486.
