Rotary Used Car Lot: Where gems are found cheap | Letters | June 23

Have you been longing for a pickup truck for those trips to the dump? Looking for a scooter to help save gas on the commute? Or a first car for your teen?

The Bainbridge Island Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale may have just what you are looking for coming up July 2.

Since its beginning in 1960, the annual Rotary Auction has received and sold hundreds of vehicles. Proceeds from the auction go to support the club’s activities. Turning metal into gold results in everything from island recreation projects to micro-finance in the developing world.

Last year the car lot took in record totals, with vehicles donated including autos, pickup trucks, SUVs, convertibles, flatbed trucks, campers, camper trailers, golf carts, motor bikes and motor scooters.

Vehicles are sold at a silent auction, which becomes a live auction if there are two or more people are contending at closing time.

Pickup trucks are the most popular vehicles sold. A couple of years ago, a person bought a Lexus as a graduation gift for her grandson. What a grandmother! One person’s gas hog is another’s treasure.

Did we ever have a donated vehicle that didn’t sell? Yes, but it was a car that wouldn’t go into reverse.

This year a youth crew from Bainbridge High School is going to help by detailing the donated vehicles. Detailing services are just the beginning for the Rotary Club’s new youth mentoring program.

If you have a car or boat you have been thinking of donating to the auction, now is the time. We accept vehicles that are in safe and running condition.

We take care of the paperwork, and you can get a tax credit for the amount your vehicle sells for at the auction. If you have a vehicle or boat to donate, contact Jim at 842-2093 or Jay at (206) 919-5376 or mitchelljay@gmail.com.

Donations are accepted at Woodward School from June 25-29. Rotary Auction festivities begin with a preview of the merchandise on July 1 from 3-7 p.m. p.m. The Rummage Sale will be held the next day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
