Forum allows islanders to express viewpoints
February 24, 2011 · 3:19 PM
We are overwhelmed by the countless texts, phone calls and emails of support from our community and beyond in regard to our letter to the editor (“Coach had little regard for seniors,” Feb. 11.)
Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement. From the number of postings (certainly not all supportive) on the newspaper’s website, we can only conclude that there has been a long suppressed desire for people to express their viewpoints and be heard.
If our letter was the catalyst to opening up lines of communication and bringing new insights to light, we would have a hard time apologizing for that.
Let’s hope that the mountains of feedback can be viewed constructively by all, to improve and develop the program.
Many of the naysayers admonish us for using a public forum to bring up the discussion at all, saying that these concerns are to be dealt with at the school administration level.
Although some of the online comments do not deserve to be dignified by a response, we would like to clarify that we, and other parents, did make our concerns known over a year ago to the coach, principal and athletic director.
No actions were taken, no follow-up was done. So yes, the public forum has its appeal.
